An Interview with APAN Founding Chair

Q: Provide a brief intro of yourself?
KC: Ph.D, UCLA
Domestic IPv4 network in South Korea, 1982.
Found APNG in the early 1990s. Found APAN in the 1990s.
Found around 10 more international Internet organizations in 1990s~2010s

 

Q: Where do you work and what are you currently doing?
KC: Professor at KAIST, 1982~2008 (and Professor Emeritus from 2008).
Writing Asia Internet History, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s (5 volumes)

 

Q: What is your history with APAN?
KC:
Found APAN in 1990s with colleagues from Australia, China, Japan among other along similar advanced RENs in USA and Europe

 

Q: How long have you been associated with APAN? What specific activities and work have you been involved in?
KC:
Founding chair for around 10 years

 

Q: Please share one or two interesting experiences you had with the APAN community.
KC:
Founding process: we had around 10~20 meetings internationally before we found APAN. When we were busy, we even had “monthly” preparation meetings

 

Q: What value does APAN bring to you personally and to your work?
KC:
This was the tough job with good reward. We have been meeting yearly/bi-yearly since 1990s with good collaboration globally; north America, Europe

 

Q: How do you think APAN should be improved and enhanced?
KC: Need to define the mission of APAN for the 21st century.  What we developed was for the 20th century

 

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time, aside from work?
KC: Writing books, Asia Internet History with around 50 colleagues around the world since 2000s. Climbing and hiking mountains.  Surfing on the beaches.
