A Transformative Journey: My Experience as a Fellow at APAN59, Yokohama, Japan

Introduction

Attending the 59th Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) meeting in Yokohama, Japan, from March 3–7, 2025, was a defining moment in my professional journey. As a Network Engineer at Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), formerly known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), I have always sought opportunities to enhance my knowledge in networking and emerging technologies. The APAN59 fellowship provided the perfect platform to engage with experts, explore cutting-edge advancements, and expand my professional network. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to BdREN for their support in making this experience possible.

Navigating Last-Minute Challenges

Receiving my visa at the last moment, on the evening of February 27, 2025, left me with little time to prepare for my journey. The uncertainty was overwhelming, but with encouragement from BdREN and APAN Local Organizing Committee (LOC) personnel, I took the leap and embarked on this life-changing experience. Arriving in Yokohama at midnight on March 2, I quickly adapted to my new surroundings and prepared for the sessions ahead.

Key Learnings and Insights from APAN59

Day 1: March 3, 2025

  • APAN Introduction & Fellowship Meeting
The fellowship program brought together 26 fellows and APAN experts, providing a platform to introduce ourselves, discuss our research interests, and share our aspirations. This session laid the foundation for valuable networking and long-term collaborations.
  • IPv6 & 5G WG
As a backup support staff for this session, I had the opportunity to engage with discussions on advanced IPv6 deployment strategies, security enhancements, and best practices. The insights shared by Navaneethan C. Arjuman via Zoom were particularly enlightening.
  • Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6) Training (APNIC)
Led by Mr. Imtiaz Sajid from APNIC, this session provided a deep dive into SRv6 architecture, applications, and best practices. The knowledge gained here was instrumental in broadening my understanding of next-generation networking.

Day 2: March 4, 2025

  • Network Engineering Special Interest Group (SIG)
This session featured groundbreaking discussions on global networking projects, including:

    • Polar Connect: A Northern European initiative to establish secure and resilient connectivity through the Arctic to Asia and North America for research, development, innovation, and education.
    • A demonstration of 400G technology and its impact on supercomputing across 25 NREs.
    • A live robotic telesurgery between Japan and Singapore, where reducing latency was the key challenge, and innovative solutions were discussed.
  • Opening Ceremony and Cultural Show
I had the opportunity to attend the opening ceremony followed by a social dinner. It was a mesmerizing experience to witness live Japanese traditional songs and dance performances. I also met many new people and exchanged contacts for future collaborations.

Day 3: March 5, 2025

  • AI-Driven Networks Working Group
A highlight of this session was the presentation by Mr. Saqib Jamal, a Ph.D. student at Jeju National University, on “LLM-based IBN for Resource Management in Space Air Ground Integrated Network (SAGIN).” He explored AI-driven satellite network integration, controller placement challenges, and advanced traffic optimization strategies.

Day 4: March 6, 2025

  • Training: Introduction to Network Automation (APNIC)
This hands-on session, led by Mr. Imtiaz Sajid, covered:

    • The importance of automation in networking operations.
    • How to use tools like Salt, YAML, Jinja, NAPALM, and Netmiko for automating network configurations.
    • Real-world applications of network automation frameworks.

Day 5: March 7, 2025

The conference concluded with the closing ceremony, where I was honored to receive my fellowship certificate from the APAN59 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chair, Mr. Shinji Shimojo. It was a moment of pride, reflection, and gratitude as I connected with fellow attendees for final discussions and group photos.

Reflections and Future Aspirations

APAN59 was more than just a conference; it was a transformative learning experience. The wealth of knowledge, exposure to state-of-the-art technologies, and interactions with global experts have inspired me to drive change in my professional domain. I look forward to applying these insights in my work at GAU and contributing to future APAN initiatives.

For anyone in the networking and ICT domain, I highly recommend participating in APAN events. The experience is invaluable, and the opportunities for learning and collaboration are endless.

Thank you, APAN, for this incredible journey!
