Collaboration, Innovation, and Impact: My APAN 61 Experience

I had the honor of attending APAN 61 as a selected Fellow, and it was truly a transformative experience for me. Being part of such a diverse and intellectually vibrant platform allowed me to learn, connect, and reflect in ways I had not experienced before.

Getting to Know APAN

I attended the APAN introduction session where I gained a clear overview of the mission, structure, and regional role of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network. I learned how APAN connects research and education institutions across the Asia-Pacific region and plays a vital role in strengthening digital collaboration and innovation.

Understanding the broader vision of APAN helped me realize how important regional networking is for sustainable technological and academic development.

Exploring Internet Governance and Digital Policies

One of the sessions that deeply engaged me was on Internet Governance, National Data and Digital Policies, and Internet Fragmentation. I listened to discussions about how national policies in different Asia-Pacific countries shape the openness, interoperability, and resilience of the Internet. This session made me reflect on how digital policies influence not only technology but also academic freedom, innovation, and global connectivity.

My Deep Dive into Generative AI

The most impactful part of my participation was attending the AP-GAINED working group sessions on Generative AI. Over two days, I attended six sessions focused on understanding the depth of AI and its applications in everyday life. I explored how AI can enhance the teaching and learning process. I gained hands-on experience with GenAI tools and saw how they can be applied in real-world educational contexts. These sessions strongly aligned with my interest in education, especially in supporting underserved communities through AI-based learning systems.

Opening Ceremony and Cultural Pride

The opening ceremony was full of learning and inspiration. I enjoyed the presentation by Karin Wessel, which highlighted collaboration and shared progress. I felt especially proud during the presentation on the local heritage of Bangladesh. Seeing my country represented in such a beautiful and eye-catching way was truly meaningful.

Learning Beyond My Discipline

Although my background is in philosophy and education, I attended an agriculture-related session presented by Professor Mohammad Shaef Ullah titled “The Impact of Invasive Species on Agriculture in Asia.” This session introduced me to important agricultural terms and challenges. I learned about how invasive species affect agriculture and why safeguarding Asia’s agricultural biodiversity is crucial. It was refreshing to step outside my academic field and learn something completely new.

Networking and Future Collaboration

For the first time, I had the opportunity to interact closely with fellows and researchers from different Asia-Pacific countries. I shared my work and future plans in education, particularly my idea of providing AI-based afterschool support for underserved children.

I had meaningful conversations with the other APAN fellows- Gayani Heranath from Sri Lanka and Tumen-Ayush from Mongolia. They showed interest in my idea and later reached out to explore how we could collaborate within APAN.

I also had an engaging discussion with the AP-GAINED Working Group, including Professor Roshan Ragel,  Professor Asitha Bandaranayake and Pramila Gamage from LEARN. I actively asked them how I could contribute to their Generative AI initiatives. I shared my idea of developing AI-powered afterschool learning support for underserved children across Asia-Pacific countries, especially for those who lack access to private tutoring or consistent academic guidance at home.

They responded positively to the idea, acknowledged the regional need, and expressed interest in exploring how such an initiative could align with APAN’s objectives. Following our discussion, I formally emailed them to propose further steps and explore possible avenues for collaboration. I remain hopeful that this initiative will grow into a concrete and impactful partnership and meaningful collaboration in the near future.

Throughout the five days, I closely observed the leadership of Liana Jacinta, General Manager of APAN Ltd. Her organizational strategy and inclusive leadership style left a strong impression on me.

Moments of Joy and Recognition

Apart from the academic sessions, I truly enjoyed the refreshment arrangements created a relaxed space for informal discussion and connection. Winning 3rd prize in the quiz segment was a very happy and memorable moment for me. I also participated in the cultural fashion show to represent Bangladesh, which was a proud and joyful experience.

Closing Reflections and Leadership Inspiration

The closing ceremony was equally meaningful. The keynote by Farah Kabir, Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh, on women’s empowerment was enthusiastic and inspiring. She spoke about the barriers women face in both family and professional environments across the Asia-Pacific region and emphasized creating inclusive workplaces. Receiving the e-certificate and souvenir gift marked a memorable conclusion to the event.

Final Reflection

Attending APAN 61 as a Fellow was not just about attending sessions, it was about learning across disciplines, building meaningful networks, sharing ideas, and envisioning future collaboration.

The experience strengthened my commitment for inclusive education and contributing actively to regional initiatives within APAN.
